1. Product Description

This product is a diatomite-based soil improver / soil conditioner designed for use in agriculture, horticulture and professional growing systems.

Main component: Diatomite (diatomaceous earth) – a porous mineral formed from the fossilised silica shells of microscopic algae (diatoms).

Purpose: To support soil physical functions such as water-holding capacity, porosity and structure, and to complement plant nutrition programmes as a soil function tool.

The product is not marketed or intended as a fertiliser, pesticide, plant protection product, biocidal product, feed additive or food/health supplement, and it should not be used for those purposes.

2. Safe Handling

Diatomite is a mineral, chemically inert solid. However, in fine powder form it can create dust, which may cause mechanical irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract. Sensible handling measures are therefore recommended.

General use:

  • Aim to minimise dust generation during handling and application.
  • When applying outdoors in windy conditions, position yourself so that dust is carried away from your face and breathing zone.

For prolonged or intensive handling (e.g. bag emptying, mixing, spreading in enclosed spaces), the following are recommended:

  • A suitable dust mask / particulate respirator (e.g. FFP2/FFP3-type mask),
  • Safety glasses or goggles,
  • Gloves and long-sleeved work clothing where appropriate.

Avoid:

  • Intentionally breathing dust or placing your face close to open bags or spreaders.
  • Direct contact of dust with the eyes.
  • Handling the product in the same area as food, drink or smoking; do not eat, drink or smoke while using the product.
  • Using the product as animal feed or for human consumption in any form.

After handling:

  • Wash hands and any exposed skin with soap and water.
  • Wash dusty clothing separately where possible.

3. Storage

Proper storage helps maintain product quality and safe handling.

  • Store in the original, closed packaging.
  • Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Whenever possible, keep bags off the floor on pallets and away from damp walls or direct moisture.
  • Protect from rain and direct sunlight; wet product may form lumps and create unnecessary dust when broken up.
  • Store out of reach of children and animals.
  • Where practical, store separately from strong acids, strong bases, and from food or feed products.

4. First Aid – Basic Guidance

This section provides basic first-aid guidance in the event of accidental exposure. In all cases of doubt, or if symptoms persist or are severe, seek medical advice and show the product label or packaging.

4.1 Inhalation

  • If you feel you have inhaled too much dust, move to fresh air.
  • Rest in a comfortable position and loosen tight clothing.
  • If coughing, breathing difficulty or chest discomfort persists, seek medical attention.

4.2 Eye contact

  • If product enters the eyes, rinse cautiously with plenty of clean water.
  • Hold the eyelids open and continue rinsing for several minutes.
  • If contact lenses are present and easy to remove, take them out and continue rinsing.
  • If redness, pain or blurred vision persists, consult a healthcare professional.

4.3 Skin contact

  • Brush or wipe off any loose material from the skin.
  • Wash the affected area with soap and water.
  • If redness or irritation develops, keep the area clean and dry; seek medical advice if needed.

4.4 Ingestion

  • If a small amount is accidentally swallowed, rinse mouth with water and give a little water to drink (if the person is conscious).
  • Do not induce vomiting.
  • If any discomfort, nausea or pain occurs, seek medical advice, taking the product packaging or label with you.

5. Disposal

The product is mineral and largely inert; the main concern is dust and physical load, not chemical toxicity. Local regulations must always be followed.

  • Where appropriate and lawful, unused product may be reused for its intended purpose (e.g. applied to soil).
  • Small quantities may often be incorporated into soil in a controlled way, where this is consistent with the product's normal use and local regulations.
  • Larger quantities or product contaminated with other substances (e.g. oils, chemicals, fertilisers) should be disposed of via authorised waste management facilities, in line with local environmental legislation.

Empty bags may contain residual dust:

  • Handle them in a way that minimises dust release.
  • Where possible, follow local guidance on recycling, recovery or disposal of packaging.
